Geographic Information Systems 

This 5-course, 15-16 credit pathway is designed for students who wish to enhance their future with skills in geographic information systems (GIS).  Coursework stresses hands-on service learning along with relevant theory, giving students practical experience in addressing real-world problems and questions. 

Pathway Requirements (listed in suggested course sequence):

  • ENG 101: Composition & Presentation 1 (3 credits)
  • GIS 102: Our Digital Earth (4 credits)
  • GEO 101: Intro to Geography (3 credits)
  • GIS 204:  Intro to GNSS (1 or 2 credits) 
  • GIS 300: Geographic Information Systems I (4 credits)

This pathway may lead to the following programs at UMaine Machias:

B.S. in Environmental Geographic Information Science with concentrations in:

  • Community Applications
  • Ecological Applications
  • Spatial Data Science

Undergraduate certificates in Geographic Information Systems Applications (Basic and Advanced)

Completion of these programs will allow students to pursue careers such as:

  • Land use and land records mapping

Project management GIS skills are in-demand in a broad and growing range of industries and employers, including:
