Summer Institute FAQs
Who is eligible to attend the Early College Summer Institutes?
The Summer Institutes are open to rising sophomores, rising juniors, and rising seniors, including home school students. Maine residency is not a requirement.
Where will the Institutes be held?
The Summer Institutes will be held at the University of Maine at Machias campus at 116 O’Brien Avenue in Machias. Field trips to other local attractions will depend on the weather and individual program schedules; transportation will be provided by UMM. Summer Institute participants will be housed in Sennett Hall, one of UMM’s residence halls.
Is a schedule available?
The Summer Institutes will begin on Wednesday, July 8, with a check-in, orientation, and welcome period from 9:30–11 a.m.
A closing ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 12 p.m.

How many students will be accepted?
Each Institute will accept 20 students, for a total of 60 students in the program. You will only get a spot in the institute once we have received all the necessary paperwork as well as your payment.
Do I have to be registered for Early College at UMM to attend the Summer Institute?
You do not have to be a registered Early College student to attend the Summer Institute. If you’re interested in earning college credits, you may register as an Early College student and enroll in a 3-credit online course associated with the program of your choice. You will be able to select this option during the application process. Online courses begin on July 11th and end on August 22nd.
How much does it cost?
The cost of the Summer Institute only is $300.
The cost of the Summer Institute plus a 3-credit online course is $375 plus textbook costs for in-state students and $1800 plus textbook costs for out-of-state students.
Are scholarships available?
Scholarship funding is available. If you wish to be considered for scholarship funding, then fill out the optional scholarship application here.
How will I know if I get a scholarship?
After reviewing all scholarship materials we will contact you to let you know whether or not you received a scholarship. The maximum scholarship amount will be $350. All students will be required to pay at least $25.00 to attend.
What’s included in the cost?
The $300 covers the costs of all workshops and scheduled activities, meals, and overnight accommodations in UMM’s Sennett Hall for 3 nights (July 8, 9 and 10).
The $375/$1800 charge for the Summer Institute Plus covers the cost of the institute plus the tuition and/or fees associated with the online course.
Are accommodations available for students with disabilities?
Yes. When filling out the general application, please indicate if the student will require a reasonable accommodation. Our Manager of Accessibility Services will then reach out to you.
