UMaine Machias has been nationally recognized by the Campus Pride Index twice in the last three years and is the only college/university in Maine to have achieved this recognition. UMaine Machias offers a variety of services to students including Safe Spaces, physical and mental health services, training on LGBTQ+ issues and concerns, gender neutral housing and restroom options, and the opportunity to change names within our academic systems. Additionally, the 100% Society is a student run organization on campus that focuses on LGBTQ+ education, offers support, and holds various events on campus throughout the year. All are welcome to the meetings and events!
Student Health Insurance and Transgender Students
The University of Maine System Student Health Insurance plan offered through United Health Care covers hormone treatments with a mental health diagnosis. Students are encouraged to set-up appointments with their mental health provider. For students who may want to utilize UMaine Machias’ mental health counselor, they can schedule an appointment by calling the Student Affairs Office at (207) 255-1305.
Student Gender Change Form
UMaine Machias provides an opportunity for students to change their name and gender in our systems. The Registrar’s Office has a “Request to Change Gender in MaineStreet Database” for students to complete. The Registrar can be contacted at (207) 255-1330 or at their office located on the 2nd Floor of Powers Hall. You can also visit the “Updating Your Personal Information” page directly through the Registrar’s Office and find forms there.
Athletics and Intramurals
UMaine Machias does not discriminate in any Athletic or Intramural programs. For students in the transition process, UMaine Machias provides an opportunity for students to participate in sports and intramurals based on the student’s identified gender.
