Reserves Policy

Instructors may place books, periodical articles, and non-print items on reserve in the Library. This enables us to circulate assignment-related materials for specific classes to students for limited periods of time (hours or days) and promotes availability by preventing them from being checked out for longer periods (weeks.) Items on reserve can only be checked out by current students, staff and faculty of the University of Maine at Machias.

In order for an item to be placed on reserve without violating copyright law, it must belong either to the Library or to the instructor. When neither the instructor nor UMaine Machias owns a copy, the item can be purchased by following the usual procedure and then placed on reserve. When removed from reserve, it will become part of the Library’s circulating collection.

To place items on reserve, the instructor should turn in a completed reserve form, accompanied by the physical items, to one of the library staff. Putting an item on reserve may take up to three business days. At the end of the semester, the Library will remove the items from reserve. Library copies will be returned to the circulating collection, and instructors will be informed when personal copies may be picked up.
