Section: Sabbatical Leave and Procedures

In reading and applying this section, it is essential do so in keeping with Article 19 of the UM/AFUM Agreement. In cases of apparent conflict between the two documents, the Agreement prevails.
Sabbaticals
Unit members may make an application during their sixth year for a sabbatical leave. Applications for sabbaticals shall be submitted to the Vice President for Academic Affairs or his/her designee in accordance with procedures established at each campus which shall include in review and recommendation by the division. (Leaves, Article 19)
Sabbatical leave may be granted to a faculty member by the President upon recommendation of the appropriate division chair and the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University of Maine at Machias. Sabbatical leave may be granted at full pay plus fringe benefits for one semester1 or for half pay plus full fringe benefits for a two semester period. Options concerning pay plus fringe benefits arrangements must be proposed to and agreed to in writing in the Business Office, after receiving approval from the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President.
Sabbatical leave is viewed as a necessary incentive for post-doctoral travel, Study, research, or publication, but also as an incentive for faculty members to pursue advanced degrees. Sabbatical leave may be granted to a faculty member if, in the opinion of the appropriate division chair, the Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the President, the individual faculty member’s resultant professional growth would substantially contribute to the long-range improvement of the faculty of the University of Maine at Machias.
Individuals granted sabbatical leave should accept them with the understanding that they will return to the University of Maine at Machias for at least one full year of service after completion of the sabbatical, or that they refund the money to the University which was expended on their sabbatical leave. A faculty member on sabbatical leave is entitled to receive any systematic pay raise granted during the sabbatical, and may count the year of sabbatical leave as a year of service at the University of Maine at Machias. A faculty member on sabbatical leave may not accept any employment during that leave which was not part of the approved sabbatical leave plan.
Sabbatical Leave Application Procedures
Written application for sabbatical leave must be submitted to the division chair by September 30 of the year preceding the proposed leave. The application will then be forwarded by the chair with his/her recommendation to the Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs by October 15. The application and action on the application will be governed by Article19 of the current UM/AFUM Agreement.
The application should include: supporting data, as appropriate; describe the sabbatical leave activities; clearly state the individual benefits, and the expected benefits to UMM. The criteria to be used in endorsing and prioritizing applications will be: (1) clarity of goals and objectives of the application; (2) appropriateness and completeness of supporting data; (3) value of the sabbatical to the professional growth of the individual; (4) value of the sabbatical to UMM; (5) length of service to UMM of applicant, and (6) date of last sabbatical leave. The Vice President for Academic Affairs will forward all applications with his/her recommendation to the President. The President will make the final decision and announce the name(s) of the successful applicant(s).
