UMM athletics to add men’s and women’s varsity cross country team
The University of Maine at Machias athletics department has announced the addition of men’s and women’s varsity cross country beginning in September 2019. Coached by UMM Director of Athletics and Fitness, Mike Belanger, the team will compete in the YSCC.
“I am excited to announce the addition of cross country and look forward to the challenge of coaching the team in the fall,” said Belanger. “Cross country gives us the opportunity to expand our recruiting reach and gives existing students an opportunity to compete at the college level.” Belanger credits Head of Campus, Andy Egan, for his support of the expansion of the athletics department.
“Since his arrival a few months ago, Mike Belanger has really brought a lot of energy to UMM athletics,” says Egan. “Cross country is a great fit for UMM and will provide another opportunity for our students to compete, stay fit and experience intercollegiate athletics.”
High school cross country has a rich history in Washington County, and the region is also home to many events, including amateur trail races and ultra-marathons. UMM hopes to add to that legacy and compete for YSCC championships.
UMM Athletics currently consists of men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball. The addition of men’s and women’s cross country will bring the athletics department to 7 teams. “We have a small but competitive athletics department,” added Belanger. “We will continue to explore ways to expand in order to provide a stronger academic and athletic experience for our students.”
