Dawnland to show at UMM
The University of Maine at Machias will present a screening of the award-winning documentary film “Dawnland,” on Monday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. This feature-length film follows the first-ever Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Native Americans as its members travel across Maine to explore the painful history of the state’s child welfare practices in indigenous communities. Members of the Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot communities give testimony about their personal experiences with the government-sanctioned separation of Native children from their families, a policy that endured for much of the 20th century.
The screening will be held in UMM’s Performing Arts Center and is free and open to the public. Following the film there will be a talk and Q&A session hosted by Denise Altvater, an activist and co-founder of the Wabanaki-State Truth & Reconciliation Commission.
