Alumni Spotlight – Elizabeth Sullivan

The Alumni Spotlight for December shines on Elizabeth Sullivan, 2006 UMM graduate from the Environmental Studies/Behavioral Science and Community Studies program. Originally from Connecticut, Liz now lives in Marshfield and is the Human Services Instructor at Washington County Community College in Calais.

Tell us a little bit about what you are doing now: I instruct a number of human services courses and provide academic advising to students in my program. I’m also President of the Board of Directors for the Health Equity Alliance and the Vice President of the Board of Directors for Sunrise Opportunities.

What is the most valuable thing you learned while at UMM?

UMM taught me the value of making community connections. My time at UMM allowed me to build relationships with members of the staff, faculty, and the community, many of which I maintain today. The network that I built while a student at UMM has allowed me to grow as a professional within the community.

Do you have any advice for current students at UMM?

My advice for UMM students would be to get involved – Becoming a member of the campus community through student organizations provides valuable experience that can be used long after graduation.

How did your time at UMM prepare you for what you are doing now?

As a college instructor I often reflect back on my experience at UMM and the excellent faculty that taught and assisted me throughout my education. UMM helped to form me as a professional and also provided me with strong role models for my current career.

How has UMM made a positive impact on your life?

UMM provided me with an opportunity to learn about myself and to build my leadership skills. UMM also inspired me to continue my education – I attended the University of Southern Maine and received my Master’s degree with support and assistance from many faculty at UMM.
