Atusville Studied by Community and Place Students

University of Maine at Machias students recently visited the lost community of Atusville, on outer Court Street in Machias, as part of their Community and Place Studies. Their guide was Professor Marcus LiBrizzi, who has written a history of Atusville. “Atusville was a mixed-race community started by freed slaves after the American Revolution and lasting until 1965, when the last resident died,” LiBrizzi said. “Learning about Atusville expands a person’s horizons about the history and culture of Downeast Maine, revealing this region to be more diverse and inclusive than assumed, and also bringing to light some of the long-lost folklore involving the paranormal.”
