University of Maine at Machias student-athlete recognized with national award

Machias, Maine — University of Maine at Machias junior Dawn Johnson has been named Student Athlete of the Year for Division 2 soccer by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). Awarded for academic performance and community involvement, the annual award is one of three individual awards presented by USCAA at its banquet on Nov. 8.

Johnson, a psychology major from South Orleans, Massachusetts, was one of the season’s top offensive players, but the selection criteria focus on academic performance and community service and she excels in both areas.  Johnson is a member of Student Senate, and a board member and coach for the Downeast Youth Soccer Association. She also works with adults on the autism spectrum during school breaks.

“I really work hard and do my best with everything on and off the soccer field,” says Johnson. “I love sharing the joy of the game with others, especially youth. I’m fortunate to work with individuals on the autism spectrum, not only because it’s great experience for my future career, but because it motivates me to bring my A game.”

“I knew right away Dawn was the right choice,” says Lori Schneiders, UMM assistant professor of counseling psychology who chose Johnson as her teaching assistant. “She is organized and compassionate when tutoring her peers, and is always ready to help.”  

“I’m really humbled by this recognition,” Johnson says. “I’m just not sure it’s really sunk in yet.”
