The Alumni Spotlight shines this month on Tim Heavrin, who graduated from the University of Maine at Machias in 1994 with a major in English and Secondary Education.
Tell us a little bit about what you are doing now.
Currently, I am serving as the shift supervisor (rank of Sargent) at the Arizona State Prison Complex — Winslow Complex unit.
What is the most valuable thing you learned while at UMM?
Writing & communications skills, along w/ analytical/ critical thinking & organization have helped me to prepare for my career.
Do you have any advice for current students at UMM?
Always think outside the box when it comes to matching your majors/minors to career choices. You never know where the skills learned are applicable to other areas beyond the obvious. That’s what I did when choosing to go into corrections. And it’s served me well for over 20 yrs now.
How has UMM made a positive impact on your life?
I learned an appreciation for classical music & literature which are how I relax from the stresses of work.
