Book Arts Certificate
The Book Arts Certificate at the University of Maine at Machias (UMaine Machias) is a one-year, 27-credit program of study that immerses the students into the world of bookmaking as a means of artistic expression. Students will gain access to UMaine Machias’s Book Arts studio, containing an operational printing press and papermaking studio. In addition to foundational courses in book arts, students will takes courses in electronic and periodical production, papermaking, and will choose a studio arts elective in drawing, painting, photography or graphic design.
To earn the certificate, students will complete a final capstone project that may include a series of works of either a traditional or experimental nature, or an edition of an artist’s book. The program has an appeal to traditional arts students, those seeking specific teaching certification, or non-traditional students who wishes to hone their studio skills.
