Here, you will find vital information to help you prepare for college and assist in your transition to the UMaine Machias community. 🌟 Welcome to UMaine Machias!
We’re thrilled you’ve decided to join our community. Now it’s time to get ready for an exciting semester ahead! This New Student Checklist will guide you through everything you need to do before classes begin – from housing and financial aid to transcripts, immunizations, and more. Complete each step at your own pace, and you’ll be ready to start your UMaine Machias journey with confidence.
1. Secure Your On-Campus Housing
Planning to live on campus? Complete your housing application and submit any required forms to reserve your space in the residence halls.

2. Complete Your Financial Aid
Make sure your FAFSA has been submitted and review your financial aid offer in MaineStreet. Complete any outstanding requirements as soon as possible to avoid delays.
- Submit your FAFSA at studentaid.gov (School Code: 002053)
- Submit by March 1 for priority consideration (you can still apply after the deadline).
- Check your status in MaineStreet once submitted.

3. Submit Your Final Transcripts
Ask your high school and any colleges you attended to send official final transcripts to UMaine Machias. Final transcripts are required before enrollment can be completed.
- High school seniors: Send your final transcript after graduation.
- Transfer students: Request official transcripts from any previous colleges.

4. Submit Your Immunization Records
Maine state law requires all students to provide proof of immunizations before arriving on campus. Students should use the University of Maine Immunization Portal (PointNClick) to securely submit copies of their immunization records.

5. Complete the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment
The ALEKS Math Placement Assessment helps determine the math course that is right for you. Most incoming students are required to complete this assessment before registering for math courses.
ALEKS Math Placement Assessment 💡 A $25 fee will be added to your student bill for the assessment.
6. Attend Discover Downeast Weekend (Recommended)
Start your college experience early by joining Discover Downeast Weekend, held during the last weekend of June. This free pre-semester experience gives incoming students an opportunity to meet future classmates, explore campus and the Machias area, participate in local excursions, and become more comfortable before the fall semester begins. Housing and meals are included.

7. Explore the Science Bridge Program (STEM Students)
Students majoring in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or related fields are encouraged to apply for the Science Bridge Program. This immersive experience brings students to campus before the fall semester for hands-on learning, math preparation, faculty mentorship, and community building. Participants also complete FYS 101 as part of the program.

8. Connect with Student Accessibility Services (If Applicable)
Students seeking academic accommodations should contact Student Accessibility Services as early as possible. Early planning helps ensure accommodations are in place when classes begin.

9. Connect with Veterans Services (If Applicable)
Veterans, active-duty service members, and military-connected students can access resources and support through Veterans Services.

10. Stay Connected
