UMS Changes to Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP)
Voluntary Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
Benefits and rates are subject to state and federal requirements and Maine state approval. Company reserves the right to make any changes necessary to meet such requirements.
All non-international undergraduate students enrolled in 9 credit hours or more and graduate students enrolled in 6 credit hours or more are eligible to enroll in the University of Maine System’s voluntary health insurance plan. Plan information and/or enrollment is available at Gallagher Health. An annual health insurance charge of $4,151 will be payable to Gallagher Health upon enrollment. The annual plan is available to eligible students until September 15, 2023. The coverage period is from August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024. Enrollment will be available soon.
For eligible students whose initial enrollment at the University begins with the Spring semester, a spring-only health insurance plan will be available. Cost of coverage is $2,416 for coverage from January 1, 2024 through July 31, 2024.

Other Health Insurance Options
International Student Health Insurance
Benefits and rates are subject to state and federal requirements and Maine state approval. Company reserves the right to make any changes necessary to meet such requirements.
International Student Health Insurance is mandatory for all international students, unless proof of insurance with specified levels of coverage is provided. Information from the Office of International Programs about health insurance requirements can be found here. Cost of coverage is $2,820 for individual student coverage from August 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024 and will be charged to student accounts. International students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before September 15, 2023 to remove the charge from their account.
International students are not eligible for the voluntary SHIP plan described above.

For eligible students whose initial enrollment at the University begins with the Spring semester, spring-only health insurance coverage will be charged. Eligible students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before January 31, 2024. Cost of coverage is $1,641 for coverage from January 1, 2024 through July 31, 2024.
Summer-only coverage is also available. Cost of coverage is $446 for coverage from June 1, 2023 through July 31, 2023.
