Education Benefits
Programs at the University of Maine at Machias are approved by the State Approving Agency for Veterans’ Education Programs for the education and training of veterans, servicemen, and dependents of disabled and deceased veterans.
Students who expect to receive benefits should contact the nearest VA Regional Office or the UMaine Machias Registar’s Office for information concerning eligibility, counseling and other benefits.
New students must either:
- Submit VA Certificate of Eligibility OR
- Apply for VA Benefits
Students who are eligible for VA benefits are responsible for paying their own tuition and fees with the exception of disabled veterans under Vocational Rehabilitation. Deferment of fees for students eligible for VA benefits may be possible subject to arrangements with the UMaine Machias Business Office.

In-State Tuition
Veterans and Active Duty Military. Beginning in the Summer of 2014, veterans of the US military services and those currently serving in the US armed forces are eligible for in-state tuition at the University of Maine at Machias, regardless of their current residency status.
Eligible students should provide one of the following documents to the UMaine Machias Registrar’s Office:
- Copy of DD 214 showing honorable discharge
- Copy of Certificate of Eligibility for Veterans Benefits (current or expired)
- Copy of US Military ID card
- Letter from squadron commander confirming that individual is currently serving in the armed forces
When documentation has been received, in-state tuition rates will apply.
Veterans’ Dependents using Educational Entitlements. Beginning in the Summer of 2015, any military dependent using educational entitlements under a GI Bill is also also eligible for in-state tuition at the University of Maine at Machias, regardless of their current residency status.
Eligible dependents should provide a copy of their unexpired Certificate of Eligibility for Veterans Benefits to the UMaine Machias Registrar’s Office.
When documentation has been received, in-state tuition rates will apply.
Note: When In-State tuition rates are applied, financial aid packages (including merit scholarships) which are based on out-of-state tuition rates will need to be adjusted accordingly.
Credit for Military Training & Experience
Veterans of US military service may receive credit for learning gained through documented military training and experience. Applicants with SMART, AARTS or USCG transcripts should submit official copies of same. Transcripts from the Community College of the Air Force should be sent directly from CCAF to the UMaine Machias Registrar’s Office for evaluation.
Applicants whose service pre-dates electronic records should complete form DD-295 and submit with copy of DD-214 (honorable discharge) and copies of all relevant certificates to the Office of the Registrar.
