Jerome to open UMaine Machias summer gallery show inspired by quarries July 16
MACHIAS, Maine — The University of Maine at Machias will open its summer gallery show, Quarry Story by artist Nina Jerome, on Wednesday, July 16 from 4-6 p.m. at the Powers Hall Art Gallery. The show will be on exhibit through Sept. 24.
Jerome has lived in Maine since 1975, studied art at Mount Holyoke College and earned her master’s in art education at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has taught in public schools for 40 years, including as an adjunct associate professor in drawing and painting at UMaine from 1992-2015.
Starting with the quarry in her home town of Addison, Jerome was inspired by how the granite faces reflected light, the water pooled
and the natural growth reclaimed its surroundings. Since 2020, Jerome has visited quarries in Franklin, Sullivan, Stonington and St. George and appreciated that each of them has different coloration, structure and appearance. The quarries share the history of the granite industry in Maine and leave their individual marks on the landscape, which Jerome captures in her paintings.

Her work can be found at other establishments around the state: the Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill and Moss Galleries in Falmouth. She has previously exhibited at UMaine’s Zillman Museum in Bangor.
