Local media report on fisheries management conference at UMM

A two-day “State of the Science” conference focusing on ecosystem-based fisheries management, hosted by the University of Maine at Machias from June 17–18, was covered by several local media outlets.

The Machias Valley News ObserverFOX 22, and Fishermen’s Voice all reported on the conference, which was the product of a collaborative partnership between the Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, Maine Department of Marine Resources and NOAA Fisheries.

UMM associate professor Tora Johnson, who helped coordinate the event, told reporters for Fishermen’s Voice that the conference brought up “a lot of different questions about aquaculture of all sorts,” including the sociological and economic implications of seaweed and salmon aquaculture. Johnson stated that participants have determined some important follow-up steps, including addressing gaps in data mapping, to build on the momentum of the conference.
