Monoprints by Jude Valentine on exhibit at UMM Art Gallery
A series of monoprints created by Jude Valentine, “The Geometrical Foundation of Natural Structure,” will be on display at the University of Maine at Machias Art Gallery through Feb. 26.
An opening reception 4–6 p.m. Feb. 15 is free and open to the public. The Art Gallery in Powers Hall is open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Wednesday and Friday; 1–2 p.m. Thursday. For more information or to request a reasonable accommodation, call 255-1200.
The series was inspired by a book of the same name by architect, mathematician and scientist Robert Edward Williams.
“I was interested in visually exploring how the numbers one through nine are manifested through nature, and embedded in natural forms through symmetry and design,” says Valentine, a UMM adjunct faculty member. “These pieces are inspired by geometric connections between elements — plants, animals, crystals, people and the landscape — as a geometric field that unifies diversity. My intent was to invite viewers to consider the idea that geometry underlies matter on a microscopic and macrocosmic level.”
On display are up to three series focusing on each number. The 27 prints in the exhibit were created as part of a residency at the South Dakota College of Mines and Technology in 2014. Four of the prints were purchased in 2017 through the Percent for Art Program and put on display at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
