UMM to offer Passamaquoddy language class

The University of Maine at Machias will offer a new course on Passamaquoddy language and culture for its spring semester, beginning January 22. Part of an ongoing effort in the community to preserve the endangered indigenous language, this introductory course will be taught by Newell Lewey, a community planner for the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point and a current graduate student in linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Classes will be held on campus, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2-3:20 p.m.
