Monthly Live Music Starts on Jan. 29
The University of Maine at Machias Student Engagement and Inclusion organization has launched a monthly concert series to take place in Kilburn Commons. Tunes at Noon will feature a different musical artist each month, and will take place from 11:15 to 12:30. Students, staff, faculty, and community members are all welcome to attend for no charge, though lunch is not included.
January’s music, on Monday, Jan 29, will be provided by Philadelphia-based artist, Joy Ike, whose music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Norah Jones and Fiona Apple. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. Ike has played thousands of shows across the United States. A write-up on NPR’s All Things Considered says “The depth of subjects she tackles in her poetic lyrics are perfectly complemented by a unique blend of neo-soul, with just the right dash of pop…a truly compelling act to watch in person, with the ability to create an intimate setting in locations big and small.” A segment on NPR’s World Cafe featured Ike as one of Pennsylvania’s up-and-coming artists.
Upcoming events in the Tunes at Noon series include Freemont Street String Band, Timber Creek, and the Gothard Sisters.
