Summer Drawing Institute: July 28 – August 3, 2024

In partnership with the University of Maine Zillman Art Museum, join artists George Kinghorn and Zach Horn on the UMaine Machias campus this summer for an art experience on the Maine coast!

Introductory Sessions: George Kinghorn

George Kinghorn received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Visual Arts from Michigan State University. Kinghorn has taught drawing and painting at Jacksonville University, Michigan State University, Florida State College at Jacksonville, among other institutions. His approach to teaching drawing focuses on awakening the eye and hand through exercises that encourage the mind to slow down and embrace the notion of true “seeing.” 

Kinghorn is the Executive Director and Curator of the Zillman Art Museum-University of Maine (ZAM), a post he has held since 2008. Prior to ZAM, Kinghorn spent nine years at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Jacksonville, Florida where he served in several positions including Deputy Director & Chief Curator and Director.

Advanced Sessions: Zach Horn

Zach is an interdisciplinary artist, focused on divergent methodologies in drawing, stop-motion animation, and social practice. He has exhibited in numerous solo museum exhibitions, such as the Maine Maritime Museum, the Museum of Work & Culture, the American Labor Museum, The University of Maine Museum of Art, the Commonwealth Museum, the Art Complex Museum, Työväenmuseo Werstas in Finland, and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art in South Korea. He has shown with various galleries and academic institutions throughout the country and abroad.

Zach received his BA from the University of Pennsylvania and his MFA from Boston University. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Massachusetts Boston with particular expertise in drawing. He has taught all levels of drawing, from foundations to MFA – with avidity, introspection, and joy.

Zach lives in Boston, Massachusetts with his wife and three ebullient sons.

  • Accommodation: UMaine Machias dormitory rooms.
  • Meals: On campus dining, provided by Sodexo, will include all meals except breakfast. These meals will include two specialty dinners.
  • Recreational Facilities: While on campus, attendees will have the use of the Pool & Gym at Reynolds Murdock Center.
  • Educational Facilities: Classrooms in Powers Hall with extended evening hours will be available.
  • Additional Activities: Visits to local sites (TBA)
  • Cost: $1,970 per participant
    • Registration fee includes campus lodging, meals (excluding breakfast) supplies, instruction, and more!
  • Participants:
    • A minimum of 12 and maximum of 20 participants will join this cohort
    • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
    • Registration will close on June 14, 2024
    • Refunds for cancellations will not be processed after June 27, 2024
