with Frank Rodriguez

July 1st, 2026

Free More Info

The Gates House is a remarkably high-quality Federal-style period house built in 1810 along the banks of the historic Machias River, in Machiasport, Maine. It is listed on the "National Register of Historic Places" and since 1966 has served as the home for the Machiasport Historical Society and a museum to foster, develop, and promote interest in historical matters, particularly those pertaining to the town of Machiasport and the surrounding Downeast region.

This summer we celebrate America's 250th birthday! What better way to celebrate than visiting the Gates House and learning about our local history and, in particular, “The Battle of the Margaretta," the first naval engagement of the American Revolutionary War. Come take a walk in the past as we visit the museum, explore the mementos and articles they have and hear about life in the time of the War.  You will find their tours are very interactive and you will gain an appreciation for the region's contributions to the War and its unique maritime history. Additionally, you will see how the community lived and worked in Machiasport over the years through local artifacts.

The Gates House also maintains a records and genealogy room, which is open to the public, for those individuals researching their family histories or seeking documentation for research projects. Engaging with the local community and visitors is a two-way conversation with and for the staff who also benefit from the knowledge and perspectives of their visitors.

Presenter:  Frank Rodriguez is President of the Machiasport Historical Society. He received an MA in National Security Affairs at Naval Postgraduate School in 1985 and an MBA in International Business from the University of Tampa in 2004. Frank was an Adjunct Professor for Military History & Leadership at the University of Tampa from 2000-2005.

Other members of the society will assist with the presentation by serving as docents and knowledgeable guides throughout the tour.

Class Information:  This is an in-person only class – held at the Gates House Museum, 344 Port Road, Machiasport ME. The presenter will be in person.

Please note:  The Gates House was built in 181O and the tour includes ascending and descending stairs to and from the second floor. Wheel chair access is very limited. Because of the size of the house, this tour is limited to 10 people.

Sleuthing Colby’s 1881 Washington County Atlas

with Jane Crosen

July 29th, 2026

Free More Info

Are you intrigued by old maps and remnants of history in the Downeast landscape? Come join editor, mapmaker, and author Jane Crosen in a virtual tour of Washington County in the late 19th century in the early days of Maine's mapping history. She will share a slide presentation on her newly arranged Coastwise edition of Colby's 1881 Atlas of Washington County and her adventures exploring the county's heritage landscape guided by period maps, photos, and other sources.

In creating the new edition, Jane arranged Colby's historic maps geographically as schooners sailed downeast, adding period photos and excerpts capturing Washington County's towns as they existed during the age of sail. She will share her journey of searching collections and, with help from local historians, sleuthing photos and the stories behind them, including historic images of the Machias area, amid the context of Colby's maps depicting the 19th-century landscape.

Presenter:  Jane Crosen’s life as an editor and mapmaker began at Delorme Publishing, working on the 1981 edition of the Maine Atlas & Gazetteer. To do her job she learned to research places and read maps, and has loved "map sleuthing" ever since. As Maine Mapmaker she has created a series of hand-drawn maps of Maine regions, including Schoodic Point to Machias, Passamaquoddy Bay & The Fundy Isles, and two Downeast lake regions, available as posters and other items. Along with her Coastwise editions of Colby's Hancock and Washington county atlases, she has also published two cookbooks and written numerous articles.

Class Information:  This is an in person only class with the instructor onsite - held in UM@M’s room SCI 102. This class will not be on Zoom, but will be recorded for those students who have signed up but find they cannot make it.

Should you wish, Jane will have copies of her atlas available for purchase at the class, or you can order one from her website. The atlas can also be found at Berry Vines in Machias, the Gates House in Machiasport, Smithereen Farm Store in Pembroke, West Quoddy Gifts in Lubec, and other local stores and historical societies. How to Read a Work of Art

with Gerard NeCastro

September 21st to October 26th, 2026

$15 More Info

Art - a diverse range of human activities involving creative imagination to express technical proficiency, beauty, or emotional power.

In this course, Dr. Gerard NeCastro will take us on a journey where we will attempt to gain a deeper appreciation for visual art. To do this we will move from the elements of art (color, form, line, etc.) and the conventions (composition, spatial scale, illumination, etc.) to the more complex matters of history, biography, and tradition, including mythology, patronage, religion, social change, and art movements. Through a combination of lecture and discussion, Dr. NeCastro will help us to build confidence about "reading" art while experiencing some of the world's greatest art.

Instructor: Dr. Gerard NeCastro taught Introduction to Humanities, which was about 50% art history and appreciation, for twenty-five years at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Maine at Machias (UM@M). He also taught the two-semester Art History survey for six years at UM@M. Dr. NeCastro is a popular presenter who has taught a number of courses for SSC over the years.

Class Information:  This is a hybrid class - held in-person in UM@M’s room SCI 102 and via Zoom and this class will be recorded. The presenter will use a combination of in person and remote presentations. No class on October 12th – Indigenous Peoples Day.
