We will look at Auschwitz and why it was chosen to play such a key role in the cruel, twisted scenario that the Nazis deemed as “The perfect solution to ridding the world of those they felt were inferior to them.”

Through a recent visit made by the host in 2019, the student will see first-hand the horrors of Auschwitz I and Birkenau (Auschwitz II) as they are today and were during the war and will begin to understand how the marginalization of the Jews, Slavs, Catholics, Poles and Homosexuals into a state of being seen as sub-human beings, and how this was sold as the truth to areas inside the Nazi regime, made it acceptable behavior to the society that lived there.   We will also be watching several videos by people associated with the Auschwitz and U.S. Holocaust museums and Holocaust survivors with discussions and questions to follow each session. SSC has arranged for a live Holocaust survivor for our last session.  92-year old Rose Schindler lived the horrors of Birkenau as a teenager and she will tell her story and answer any questions on her life, the Holocaust, life at Auschwitz, and even how she sees it relating to events in this country and the world today.  Her son Ben will also be on the presentation and be able to answer any questions she cannot.  Ben has assured me that his mother is still very strong and capable of answering the most challenging questions you may have.

The book "Two Who Survived" will be read and discussed over the first 3 weeks of the class in preparation for Rose giving her presentation during the forth session.

You can order the book from their website - "Two Who Survived; Keeping Hope Alive While Surviving the Holocaust” - or on Amazon - ISBN: 978-1-7329198-1-5 for paperback.  The cost is less if you purchase it from the Schindler's website.

Presenter:  Jacqueline O’Clair visited Auschwitz in November 2019.  She will use her personal experience, videos, photos and other material, including some powerful testimony from survivors, to try and give the student a clear picture of the crimes that were committed there.
