E2108 – Telepresence in Ocean Exploration

This class will explore the use of telepresence technology in ocean exploration.  We will learn about exploration of the deep ocean aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) ship Okeanos Explorer using remote operated vehicles and live streaming video and data. 

Instructor:  James Rawsthorne has been the Telepresence Coordinator at NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research for three years and their web developer for 8 years. He participated in the 2014 bioluminescence study in the Gulf of Mexico and the 2018 Okeanos Explorer mission to the Atlantic Ocean.  Previous to that he has been involved in live video and data streaming at Mathmatica Policy Research and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.  He was featured presenter at the 2019 Streaming Media conference (New York) and a presenter at the 2018 Ocean Forum at the MIT MediaLab.  He recently authored an article for Journal of Ocean Technology on the Future of Telepresence.
