Awarded for academic performance and community involvement, the annual award is one of three individual awards presented by USCAA at its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">banquet on Nov. 8.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Johnson, a psychology major from South Orleans, Massachusetts, was one of the season\u2019s top offensive players, but the selection criteria focus on academic performance and community service and she excels in both areas. \u00a0Johnson is a member of Student Senate, and a board member and coach for the Downeast Youth Soccer Association. She also works with adults on the autism spectrum during school breaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI really work hard and do my best with everything on and off the soccer field,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cI love sharing the joy of the game with others, especially youth. I\u2019m fortunate to work with individuals on the autism spectrum, not only because it\u2019s great experience for my future career, but because it motivates me to bring my A game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI knew right away Dawn was the right choice,\u201d says Lori Schneiders, UMM assistant professor of counseling psychology who chose Johnson as her teaching assistant. \u201cShe is organized and compassionate when tutoring her peers, and is always ready to help.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m really humbled by this recognition,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cI\u2019m just not sure it\u2019s really sunk in yet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Machias, Maine \u2014 University of Maine at Machias junior Dawn Johnson has been named Student Athlete of the Year for Division 2 soccer by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
