The UMM Alumni Spotlight shines this week on William Cherry of Marshfield, class of 1999, with a degree in Business Administration. “BJ” is the the Commercial Lines agent and Office Manager at The Varney Agency in Machias, Calais and Ellsworth offices.
Tell us a little bit about what you are doing now:
Currently, I’m employed at the Varney Insurance Agency as a Commercial Lines Agent and Office Manager for the Calais, Machias & Ellsworth offices since July, 2014. Prior to working at the Varney Agency, I was employed at Machias Savings Bank recently as AVP, Financial Services Officer, from 1992 to 2014. In my spare time I’m involved with local civic organizations like Anah Shriners of Bangor and Harwood Masonic Lodge here in Machias. In the summer months, my wife, Stacey, and I reside at our camp on Bog Lake.
What is the most valuable thing you learned while at UMM?
One of the most valuable things that I learned at UMM is knowing they skies are the limit. You put your mind to something, even when it seems to be the impossible, you can achieve it. UMM gave me the confidence to go out into the world to find a prosperous career in business that would give me a sense of worth to contribute to the community that I live in.
Do you have any advice for current students at UMM?
My advice to current students would be to embrace every challenge that you encounter. It will only make you that much stronger and give you great pride in whatever your endeavors may be. UMM gave me the sense of confidence to achieve my goals and the tools to be successful in my profession.
How did your time at UMM prepare you for what you are doing now?
UMM challenged me in all aspects for preparing me for my career. I was challenged enough to work harder to make my achievements that more valuable. I credit my advisors and professors for giving me guidance to setting a path of great success. I reflect back to my days at UMM as the beginning of this great journey of opportunities I have experienced over my working career.
How has UMM made a positive impact on your life?
When I graduated from UMM, I walked away with more that just a degree – with a sense of accomplishment which proves if you put your mind to whatever with a clear plan you can achieve it. UMM gave me such a positive outlook on my life that to this day, and for many years to come, I am thankful for my college experience. I hope everyone gives themselves a chance to get an education and get that sense of accomplishment that no one can take away from you.
