{"id":4013,"date":"2017-07-07T17:51:22","date_gmt":"2017-07-07T21:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/machias.edu\/academics\/?page_id=4013"},"modified":"2020-01-08T10:58:16","modified_gmt":"2020-01-08T15:58:16","slug":"arts-letters-peer-evaluations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/machias.edu\/academics\/faculty-handbook\/section-iii-faculty-policies\/arts-letters-peer-evaluations\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts and Letters Peer Evaluations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNIVERSITY\u00a0OF\u00a0MAINE\u00a0AT MACHIAS<br \/>\nPolicy &amp; Procedures Manual<br \/>\nSUBJECT: FACULTY PERSONNEL POLICIES SECTION III<br \/>\nPAGE: 306<br \/>\nDATE: 05\/95, 02\/01<br \/>\nSECTION: Arts and Letters Division &#8212; Peer Evaluations<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Constitution of the Committee<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nEach Peer Committee shall be composed of at least two members of the Arts &amp; Letters Division.\u00a0\u00a0One member of the committee shall be appointed by the division chair on the reommendation of the peer to be evaluated; the second member shall be appointed by the division chair. The peer to be evaluated has the option of recommending a third committee member, who shall not necessarily be from the Arts &amp; Letters Division, to be appointed by the division chair<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIn cases of tenure or promotion, the Committee shall comprise only tenured faculty.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>I. EVALUATION CRITERIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">A. Instruction<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">The Division acknowledges that excellent teaching is the single-most important measure of a faculty member\u2019s value to the University.\u00a0\u00a0The Division feels that a faculty member at UMM should be able to demonstrate excellence in instruction.\u00a0\u00a0The following areas will be considered:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">1. Command of material<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">2. Effectiveness of presentation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">3. Encouragement of student involvement in the learning process<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">4. Responsiveness to students outside class<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">5. Level of student learning<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">6. Student satisfaction with that learning<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">7. Continuing development of successful pedagogy and improvement in areas where weakness has been identified<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">8. Continuing acquisition of knowledge in the field<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">9. Attention to pluralistic perspectives<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">B. Other Criteria<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">All members are expected to contribute to the University, Division, and discipline and conduct themselves in a professional and collegial manner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">In addition, all members are expected to display excellence in the contributions they make outside the classroom.\u00a0\u00a0They will be evaluated on the following criteria:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">1. Contributions to the campus \u2013 Examples include the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">a. Active committee work<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">b. Activities that influence students: advising, field trips, special events, encouragement of student participation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">c. Grant\/fundraising activities<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">d. Activities that influence other teachers: colloquia, workshops, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">e. Representing the campus to non-university groups, e.g. guidance counselors, parents, the Board of Trustees, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">2. Professional or Scholarly Activities \u2013 Examples include the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">a. Research or artistic activity in one\u2019s field<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">b. Research or artistic activity in a new field that will expand one\u2019s potential to contribute to the community<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">c. Structured activities to expand teaching abilities<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">3. Public Service \u2013 Examples include the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">Public service is defined as involvement in programs or organizations that use professional knowledge relevant to the mission of the University as a regional institution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">a. Helping with programs in public schools<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 150px\">b. Community lectures and presentations<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><strong>II. EVALUATION PROCEDURE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">Each committee, on being notified whom they will evaluate, will be responsible for evaluating the peer in terms of the agreed upon criteria.\u00a0\u00a0Evaluations should be limited to these categories.\u00a0\u00a0As part of this evaluation the Peer Committee should:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">A. Review the self-evaluation of the peer to be evaluated.Such self-evaluation should address specifically the evaluation criteria and, when possible, contain a summary of student evaluations of the last year, including all signed written comments.\u00a0\u00a0Such a self-evaluation must be placed in the peer\u2019s personnel file.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">B. Review the personnel file which is placed in the Vice President for Academic Affairs\u2019 office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">C. Review documents, such as syllabi, deemed by the committee of the peer to be pertinent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">D. Visit classes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">E. Either Peer Committee or peer may request an interview.\u00a0\u00a0The peer evaluated should have the goals that have been set for him or her presented verbally before they appear in writing, with the idea that those goals should be mutually understood and, when possible, agreed upon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">F.
