Former Coach Fran Plunkett Robinson and 1990-91 Men’s Basketball Team to Join Athletics Hall of Fame
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will induct former women’s basketball and volleyball coach Fran Plunkett Robinson and its entire 1990-91 men’s basketball team into the Clipper Athletics Hall of Fame during Homecoming and Family Weekend on Saturday, September 28.
Robinson joined UMM in 1971 and coached the women’s basketball and volleyball teams for the next 20 years until her retirement in 1991. Her 1975-76 Clippers women’s basketball team won the Class B State Championship.
In addition to establishing women’s basketball and volleyball at UMM, Robinson is credited with bringing volleyball to Washington County high schools in the mid-1970s.
Regarded as one of the best teams in school history, the 1990-91 men’s basketball team captured the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 5 Championship to earn a berth into the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City. They were the first team in school history to win a conference championship and compete on the national stage. Led by All-Americans Drew Meredith and Todd Middleton, the Clippers finished their campaign with a 22-5 record after falling to top-seeded Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Team members include Jeff Matthews, Michael Payne, Jeff Alley, Ade Orelaja, Kristof Kovacs, Drew Meredith, Ian Talley, Todd Middleton, Derek Johnson, Derek Wilson, and Bill Tanguay. The Clippers were coached by Sean Casey and assisted by Dave Collins and John Kohtala.
Also being recognized at Saturday’s ceremony will be 2012 Hall of Fame inductee Carroll LaHaye, a member of the 1975-76 women’s basketball team.
The induction ceremony will take place during UMM’s Homecoming and Family Weekend, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, in the Reynolds Center Gymnasium.
