UMM to Hold Constitution Day Forum Sept. 17

Added on: August 31, 2012

MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will hold its annual Constitution Day Forum at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, September 17 in the Portside room of Kimball Hall.

The forum will feature a panel discussion on “Money, Speech, and Power: Citizens United.” A panel of UMM faculty will discuss the rise of Super PACs and unlimited independent political expenditures and contributions.

President Obama chastised the Supreme Court for “opening the floodgates” with Citizens United in his 2010 State of the Union address to Congress. The extension of full First Amendment protections and rights to corporations has sparked protests and fueled elements of the Occupy movement.

The UMM faculty panel members will include Ron Mosley, professor of business administration and business law, Jon Reisman, associate professor of economics and public policy, Arthur Hill, associate professor of theater and speech, and Tora Johnson, instructor of geographic information systems.

The event is free and open to the public, and there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion. For more information contact Reisman at 255-1242 or jreisman@maine.edu.
