UMM to Hold 100th Commencement May 14
Joan Getchell to be honored with alumna award; Dr. Bill Eckart to address graduating seniors
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will award degrees to more than 90 students at its 100th commencement, Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at the Frederic A. Reynolds Center. Two longtime employees will also be honored at the ceremony.
Recreation management professor Dr. Bill Eckart will deliver the commencement address to the graduating seniors. Eckart has taught at UMM for 31 years and will retire from the University in June.
“Since this will be UMM’s 100th commencement, we wanted a speaker who could somehow bridge the past and future,” said UMM President Dr. Cynthia Huggins. “Bill has been an important part of UMM for three decades and he plays a key role in keeping us grounded in our history and traditions. I can’t imagine a more appropriate speaker, at this special time in UMM’s history, than Bill Eckart.”
UMM will present its Distinguished Alumna Award posthumously to Joan Getchell, a 1983 graduate and longtime employee of the University. She worked in the Business Office for 42 years, most recently as assistant to the vice president for administration and finance. Getchell passed away on March 8, 2011.
“There is no way to fully convey what Joan Getchell meant to this university over the past four decades,” said President Huggins. “Her service and dedication to UMM—our students, employees, retirees, and alumni—were amazing. We will all remember Joan for everything that she did for UMM.”
Michael Hinerman, an English and book arts major from Machiasport, will deliver the Ivy Oration, presented each year by a graduating senior who speaks about their experiences at UMM.
