Out of the Darkness Community WalkMACHIAS, Maine – Students at the University of Maine at Machias are planning an Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Saturday, March 10 to raise awareness for suicide prevention. An information session is scheduled for Monday, February 13, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Portside of Kimball Hall. Event organizers encourage people who are interested in walking or volunteering to attend the meeting.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person dies by suicide in the United States every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, and the third for youth ages 15-24, with adolescent depression as the number one cause.

The walk is sponsored by the 100% Society and Counseling Center at UMM along with Hannaford, Machias Savings Bank, and Atlantic Mental Health Center. All funds raised will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for use in the Machias community.
