MACHIAS, Maine – Kaitlyn Burke, a University of Maine at Machias senior majoring in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts, will take part in her first solo art show at the UMM Art Galleries. Her exhibit of melted crayon art and illustrated children’s poems will be on display December 6 through January 20.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held Tuesday, December 6, from 5 to 7 p.m., providing an opportunity to meet the artist and hear about her work. Light refreshments will be provided.

Melted Crayon Painting by Kaitlyn BurkeA native of Fairfield, Burke’s attraction to color and whimsy began after taking a couple of art classes in high school. Her melted crayon paintings, which began as a simple craft project with a friend, are intended to stimulate the imagination and help adults reminisce about childhood while rekindling their creative interest.

“Life is serious enough; I want to create bits of an escape,” says Burke. “People should smile or giggle at my work, not tilt their head and wonder what the underlying idea is.”

The UMM Art Galleries, located on the first floor of Powers Hall, are open weekday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, please call Art Gallery Director Bernie Vinzani at 255-1279.
