Stephen SanfilippoMACHIAS, Maine – During the month of November, the University of Maine at Machias will present Off the Edge of the Sea, a series of concerts and learning engagements in the performing arts that will feature a diverse line up of local and national musicians.

Stephen Sanfilippo will lead off the series with “Songs of the Coast” at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 2. He will present historic, traditional, and contemporary songs of the sea and the shore, with five-string banjo, guitar, and concertina for accompaniment. Many of the songs have choruses, rousing or sensitive, which Sanfilippo will teach to the audience, encouraging participation.

Earlier in the day at 2 p.m., Sanfilippo will present a lecture on methods of researching historic songs, the lives of historic singers and song collectors, setting lyrics found without tunes to music, and he’ll tell stories of his 40-year career of singing and educating.

On Friday, November 9, the series will present “The Cage on the Edge of the Sea,” a celebration of the centennial of the birth of composer John Cage, considered one of the most influential and controversial artists of the 20th century. The 7 p.m. concert will present a range of the composer’s work spanning 50 years and will include performances by Grammy Award-winning pianist Paul Sullivan, internationally recognized percussionist Gustavo Aguilar, and UMM’s own music professor Gene Nichols and instructor Duane Ingalls.

A lecture on the life and music of Cage will be held at 6 p.m. before the concert.

Lil' RevOn Friday, November 16, the series will present “Roots Ukulele with Lil’ Rev” at 7 p.m. Lil’ Rev is an award-winning multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and music-historian. He currently writes instructional books for Hal Leonard Publishing, presents clinics all over the U.S., and tours internationally as a performer of time honored classics and original songs. Lil’ Rev was inducted into the Traditional Old-Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

Lil’ Rev will also present a workshop earlier in the day at noon titled, “Essential Strums, Strokes, and Tricks for Ukulele.” The class is open to all levels and is a virtual smorgasbord of tools for the ukulele player to use for improving his or her skills.

All performances and workshops will take place in the UMM Performing Arts Center, with the exception of Lil Rev’s ukulele workshop, which will take place in Portside, Kimball Hall. Performance tickets are $10 each, $15 for a couple, free for UMM students, and $3 for non-UMM students. Workshops and lectures are free admission. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance by calling 255-1370.

The Off the Edge of the Sea series is funded by the Libra Foundation, a Portland-based philanthropic organization.

MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias has announced plans for an eleven-day trip to China in May 2014 for both students and community members. The trip will run May 19 through 29, 2014. The trip will include tours around the Chinese cities of Beijing, Xian, Guilin, and Shanghai. Many famous landmarks and attractions will be visited, including Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall of China, Reed Flute Cave, the “Bird’s Nest” and “Water Cube” from the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing Zoo, Temple of Heaven, Terra Cotta Warriors Museum, Li River, and many others. Information sessions about the trip are scheduled for Wednesday, October 24 at 6 p.m., and Saturday, November 3 at 1 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the UMM Science Building, room 102. To prepare for the trip, all travelers will meet a number of times as a group and discuss travel plans, cultural expectations, and other essentials. With additional work and planning, students may take the trip to earn college credit. The tour fee includes airfare, ground transportation, all meals, cost of the full-time tour director, entrance fee for local attractions, and hotel stays. Organizers encourage anyone interested in the trip to register as soon as possible. Discounts are provided to travelers who sign up early. MACHIAS, Maine – The Maine Writers Series at the University of Maine at Machias will host poets Michael Brown and Valerie Lawson for a reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13. Brown and Lawson are known for promoting the poetry slam, a competition in which authors read or recite original works. Brown has published four books of original poetry, and has performed, taught, and lectured in various venues from Stockholm to South Korea. Instrumental in bringing the poetry slam to New England, he created both the weekly series at the Cantab Lounge and the theatrical show Dr. Broan’s Traveling Poetry Show. Lawson’s poetry has been published in literary journals, anthologies, and on various poetry websites. Her first book, Dog Watch, from Ragged Sky Press, was released in 2007. Twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Lawson won awards for Best Narrative Poem and Spoken Word at the Cambridge Poetry Awards. In 2008 Lawson was invited as a Legacy Poet to the first Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit. Together, Brown and Lawson co-edit the poetry journal Off the Coast, and teach poetry workshops and classes at the Cobscook Community Learning Center and the Sunrise Senior College at UMM. The Commission to Study the Conduct of Elections in Maine will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the University of Maine at Machias.  The hearing will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the Science Building, room 102.

This past May, Secretary of State Charles E. Summers, Jr. appointed a Commission to Study the Conduct of Elections in Maine, in accordance with Resolve, Chapter 133 (enacted by the 125th Maine State Legislature).  He tasked the Commission with conducting a study of voter participation, the system governing voter registration and the conduct of elections in our State; the intent being that their findings, as well as any recommended legislation, would be reported to the Joint Standing Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs of the 126th Legislature. The group will be holding public hearings throughout the state in order to better understand how Mainers view the State’s voting process and what their concerns are, as well as what they feel may need to be changed or modified.

Commission Members include former Superior Court Judge, John Atwood; attorney and former Mayor of the City of Bangor, Larry Willey; Special Advisor to Seeds of Peace and Director of its Maine Seeds Program, Tim Wilson; former City Clerk for both Portland and South Portland, Linda Cohen; and former United States Attorney, Paula Silsby.

Please note that the amount of time available for individual testimony will be limited in order to accommodate as many speakers as possible.  Written testimony is welcomed.

Friends of Maine's Seabird Islands presents Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge and Songbird Restoration at 4 p.m. on Monday, November 26.

Stephanie Martin, Programs Coordinator at Friends of Maine's Seabird Islands, will give an overview of their coastal Refuge, touching on the history of establishment, types of habitat and wildlife, the Refuge's seabird management programs, and recent research efforts to document seabird foraging areas in the Gulf of Maine, as well as the use of the islands by migrating songbirds.

Stephanie will also discuss how the Friends of Maine's Seabird Islands works to support the work of the Refuge in their new Rockland headquarters. Visit www.maineseabirds.org.

The 100% Society at the University of Maine at Machias is hosting an open house for UMM’s Gender & Sexual Minority Resource Center for students and community members looking for specific resources, general support, and answers to questions concerning Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Allied (friends & family) issues.

The 100% Society is a student organization that supports students and local community members who belong to a gender/ sexual minority or have friends or family members who do. The Student Senate and UMM Student Activities also provide oversight and support for the 100% Society and the Gender & Sexual Minority Resource Center. 100% Society elected officers who have received Safe Space and other training will hold office hours and confidentially respond to phone calls and voicemail, 255-1300. Information on the 6th Annual Rainbow Ball Weekend for Maine high school youth will also be available (April 19-21, 2013).
