Talk on Bullying and Transgender Awareness
Location: Science Building 102
Wayne Maines will present a talk on bullying and transgender awareness at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16th in room 102 of the Science Building.
Maines is all too familiar with transgender discrimination and bullying—his transgender daughter is “Susan Doe” in the recent Maine Supreme Court discrimination case on gender identity in the use of public school restrooms. The Maines family appealed the November 2012 Superior Court decision that determined there was no lawful discrimination in the original case. The Supreme Court must now decide what constitutes illegal gender discrimination under the Maine Human Rights Act.
The talk is part of National Spirit Day’s gender identity awareness and solidarity against bullying event, and is sponsored by UMM’s 100% Society, Human Resources, and the Arts and Letters Division. Refreshments will be served.
