American Red Cross Blood Drive Sponsored by Psi Delta The Environmental Recreation and Tourism Management program at the University of Maine at Machias has organized a field class to Patagonia in January 2013. An informational session on the course and trip is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, in the Reynolds Center, room 14. The class will meet once a week throughout the fall semester, with the main course running January 3–19, 2013. Class participants will travel to the Aysen region of Chile, Patagonia to engage in outdoor adventure activities, experience Patagonian culture, and learn about nature-based tourism and sustainable development. The three-credit course is open to all students, regardless of academic major, and fulfills the Global Perspectives core learning requirement. The course number is REM 210. The Psychology and Community Studies program will hold its annual Community Partner Appreciation Day to thank the many community partners from throughout the year. On Thursday, May 3, the University of Maine at Machias will present “Celebrate UMM,” the annual exposition showcasing student research and service projects. The event will run from 4:30 to 6:00 on the first floor of Torrey Hall; light refreshments will be available. UMM’s Early College Program together with AOS 96 will host a Saturday workshop and brunch for 8th grade students and their parents on the UMM campus on Saturday, May 19. “What’s N.E.X.T.?” will run from 10:00-12:30 in Kilburn Commons and will feature a student panel and speakers who will talk about preparing for high school and beyond. Sunrise County Economic Council (SCEC) and the University of Maine at Machias (UMM) are teaming up to offer a social media workshop on Wednesday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to noon. The workshop, "Making Social Media Work for Your Business" will feature a panel of Washington County businesses and nonprofit representatives who have successfully tapped into Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking tools to grow their organizations. UMM's Lisa Athearn will be working with beginner and intermediate users to get the most out of their social networks. Cost for the workshop is $10.
