UMM Dedicates Student Lounge
Machias, ME - As part of the Homecoming festivities at the Unviersity of Maine at Machias on Saturday, September 27th, members of the community gathered to remember and honor the life of a local student. More than 30 people were on hand for the dedication of the Douglas Strout Student Lounge, located on the first floor of Torrey Hall.
"Dougie", a Machiasport resident and Washington Academy graduate, was a junior at UMM when he lost a heroic battle with cancer in December 2007. Many at UMM came to know him through his student job at the university switchboard and his time spent in the student lounge.
A plaque commemorating Dougie's life now appears next to the entrance of the recently renovated lounge. The plaque reads: "Dedicated to the memory of "Dougie" Strout who used this lounge often. A UMM student and friend to everyone on campus, he is remembered for his kindness and positive attitude. This plaque is a gift from the UMM Class of 2008."
Offering words of sympathy and celebration to the crowd that gathered were UMM President Cynthia Huggins, Kim Page (Director of Student Life), Jo-Ellen Scribner (Administrative Assistant), Shelby Ross (representative from the Class of 2008), and Cody Jourdet (President of UMM's Student Senate). With the unveiling of the plaque, Ross and Jourdet cut the ribbon and welcomed the crowd in to view the new student lounge. In attendance were Dougie's parents Emery and Sharon Strout, brother Clifford Strout, and many other family and friends.
