Kuhl Exhibit to Open at UMM Art Galleries on October 5
MACHIAS, Maine – The Art Galleries at the University of Maine at Machias will display the work of Harpswell artists Georgeann and Condon Kuhl from October 5 through November 30, in an exhibit titled “Tuscany to Pompeii and Beyond.” An opening reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 5.
The Kuhl’s are co-directors of the Gallery at Widgeon Cove, and also maintain their own studios. Before moving to Maine, Condon was chair of the art department and dean of fine arts at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Georgeann was director of education and assistant director of the Des Moines Art Center.
Trained as a jeweler and metalsmith, Condon is nationally recognized for his work. Currently he concentrates on small sculptures, wall reliefs, and mixed media. Many of his works center around a theme and incorporate elements and techniques based on his jewelry background.
Georgeann is a painter and papermaker, combining these skills in the creation of handmade paper relief paintings. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad.
The show, “Tuscany to Pompeii and Beyond,” focuses on the Kuhl’s travels and experiences in Italy, with Georgeann’s views of the Tuscan landscape and Condon’s fascination with the beauty, mystery, and tragedy of Pompeii and the surrounding region serving as inspiration.
The UMM Art Galleries, located on the first floor of Powers Hall, are open weekday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. or by appointment. For more information, please call Art Gallery Director Bernie Vinzani at 255-1279.
