Suicide Prevention Walk Planned for March 10 at UMM
MACHIAS, Maine – Students at the University of Maine at Machias are planning an Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Saturday, March 10 to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Registration for the walk begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Reynolds Center Gymnasium and the walk starts at 9 a.m.
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a person dies by suicide in the United States every 15 minutes, claiming more than 36,000 lives each year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, and the third for youth ages 15-24, with adolescent depression as the number one cause.
The walk is sponsored by the 100% Society and Counseling Center at UMM along with Hannaford, Machias Savings Bank, and Atlantic Mental Health Center. All funds raised will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for use in the Machias community.
