Rooms and Roommate Issues
Roommate Conflicts
- If you are having roommate problems and are unable to resolve the conflict, contact your resident assistant. The RA will explain what alternatives are available and will assist you in resolving the situation.
Procedure for Roommate Conflicts
1) Talk to your Roommate - It is always important that you first try to resolve the conflict on your own. College is an opportunity for students to become adults and deal with conflicts on their own. If you cannot come to a resolution on your own the second step would be to contact your Resident Assistant.
2) Talk to your Resident Assistant - The RA will set up a meeting with you and your roommate to have a mediation to try and resolve the conflict.
3) Talk to your Resident Director - If the mediation with your RA is not successful, the next step is talking about the situation with your Resident Director. Your RD will set up a mediation with the roommates to come up with a peaceable solution to the conflict.
4) Roommate Switches - If a conflict cannot be resolved after the mediation with the Resident Director, the RD will work to swap roommates with someone else in the residence halls.
Roommate Changes
- All room changes must be approved by the Resident Director.
Room Condition Report (RCR)
- Each resident will sign a Room Condition Report (RCR) upon moving into their room. Also, each resident will sign the RCR before checking out or changing a room. Upon checking out of the room, the room should be in the same condition as it was at the beginning of the year, and any reported damage will require restitution. Failure to follow proper check-out procedures will result in an administrative fee of $50.00.
Room Inspections
- The University reserves the right to inspect student rooms and to regulate the use of the premises in accordance with University rules and regulations. With this in mind, University staff members may enter student rooms for the purpose of fulfilling maintenance requests and to make inspections to ensure that University health and safety standards are being observed. When fulfilling their administrative responsibilities to enforce University rules and regulations, Student Life staff members may also enter student rooms if, in their judgment, conditions exist which may be of a serious and immediate threat to the health and safety of individuals and/or damage to or loss of property may be occurring.
- Searches of rooms are authorized by the Director of Student Life or designee when there is reliable information that warrants such action. An attempt will be made to have the occupant(s) of the room present when the search is conducted. In addition, the -- - Residence Life staff secures the residence halls by conducting safety inspections of all student rooms before each official University break. If there are any items in plain view belonging to the University or if violations of University rules and regulations are evident (e.g. non approved appliances, pets, etc) these items will be confiscated by the Residence Life staff and judicial action will be taken.
- During Unviersity organized Fire Drills, Residence Life staff are required to inspect every room to ensure all students are out of the building. Though Residence Life staff members are not explicitly looking for violations to health and safety violations, if any are noted during these inspections, items will be documented and judicial action will be taken.
