Opening Party for New UMM Ice Rink on March 1
MACHIAS, Maine – A new public outdoor ice skating rink at the University of Maine at Machias is set to open this week. An opening celebration is planned for 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
The opening celebration will feature free skating, skating lessons, and outdoor games. Even individuals without ice skates are encouraged to come and take part in the fun. A fire pit will provide warmth, as well as hot cocoa, s’mores, and hot dogs.
Located on the UMM soccer field, the 50-by-100-foot rink was constructed and filled with water in mid-February, but inconsistent and unseasonably warm temperatures meant that waiting for the base to freeze would take longer than expected. With temperatures back to normal, project coordinators say that the ice is finally ready.
“Students have always used the campus pond for skating and pond hockey, but they really wanted a surface that was consistent and easy to maintain,” said Andrea Ednie, assistant professor of recreation management, who coordinated the project for UMM. “This is truly a project that the entire community will benefit from.”
Several individuals and campus departments helped with the effort, including art professor Bernie Vinzani, Director of Campus Life Paul LaMantia, and the Office of Physical Plant. The campus also extends a thank you to the Machias Fire Department for providing a generator and water pump to fill the rink.
Use of the skating rink is free and open to the public. For more information on the event, contact Andrea Ednie at 255-1303 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
