UMM Professor Makes Lobster Aquaculture Breakthrough
The June 4th issue of the Bangor Daily News featured an article on Dr. Brian Beal, professor of marine ecology, and his research at the Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research. Beal and his staff have been working to reproduce lobsters in captivity for several years and have now found a way to grow the crustaceans in a protected environment until they are several inches long — a size that should greatly improve their chance of survival once released in the wild. Their findings were recently published in the Journal of Shellfish Research.

UMM Honors Longtime Employees at Annual Recognition Brunch
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias held its annual employee recognition brunch on Friday, May 25. The event was a time to honor employees who have been with the University for many years and to celebrate the upcoming retirements of Brenda Frey, career development coordinator, and Alan Lewis, professor of ecology. Both Frey and Lewis will retire at the end of June.

UMM Announces Summer Camps for 2012
MACHIAS, Maine – This summer the University of Maine at Machias has a great line up of fun and educational camps for kids in grade school through high school. UMM will offer eight different day and overnight camps that combine special interests in sports, music, or the environment with traditional summer camp activities.

Psychology and Community Studies Program Receives Leadership Award from Maine Campus Compact
MACHIAS, Maine – The Psychology and Community Studies program at the University of Maine at Machias was recently selected as a recipient of the President’s Campus Leadership Award from Maine Campus Compact. The award was presented at MCC’s annual awards ceremony in April.

"Celebrate UMM" to Highlight Student Research and Service
MACHIAS, Maine – On Thursday, May 3, the University of Maine at Machias will present “Celebrate UMM,” the annual exposition showcasing student research and service projects. The event will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on the first floor of Torrey Hall; light refreshments will be available. All members of the campus and surrounding communities are invited to help the University celebrate the students’ accomplishments.
