UMM Provost Swain to Step Down, Return to Teaching
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias has announced that Dr. Stuart Swain will step down as the University’s provost and vice president for academic affairs at the end of the year. Swain has served as the institution’s top academic officer since January 2005.

Making the Grade: UMM Program Provides Training for Service Dogs and their Owners
MACHIAS, Maine – This summer, the University of Maine at Machias ran a unique program to help disabled individuals train their pet dogs to be service animals. The program, made possible through a grant from the Maine Charity Fund, provided training in obedience, public access, and specific tasks for nine dogs and their owners.

Immersed in the Sea: UMM's Unique MESSY Camp Provides Hands-on Marine Experiences
MACHIAS, Maine – On a Downeast pier, six teens are laying in a row on their bellies, faces so close to the water that occasionally their noses get wet. Their arms reach into the salt water, feeling for marine life: sea squirts, anemones, barnacles. “Do you see those strands that look like fuzzy seaweed?” an instructor asks. “Those are actually animals.”

UMM Named to Colleges of Distinction List
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias has been named a 2012–13 College of Distinction for providing students with the highest level of undergraduate education. UMM joins just three other schools in Maine to be honored with this recognition.

Longtime Employees Frey and Lewis Retire from UMM
MACHIAS, Maine – Two members of the University of Maine at Machias’ faculty and staff have retired after a combined 55 years of service to the institution. The month of June marked the departure of longtime UMM employees Brenda Frey, career development coordinator, and Alan Lewis, professor of ecology.

Poet Kirstin Hotelling Zona to Read at UMM on August 1
MACHIAS, Maine – The Maine Writers Series at the University of Maine at Machias will host a poetry reading by Kirstin Hotelling Zona at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1. The reading will take place in the UMM Art Galleries, located in Powers Hall.

UMM Board of Visitors Elects Officers, Appoints New Members
