UMM's Annual Community Holiday Party December 20
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will host its annual Community Holiday Party on Thursday, December 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Portside room of Kimball Hall. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature food and games for all ages to celebrate the holiday season.

UMM Professor Receives $200k Grant to Study Fast-Growth Clams and Cancer
MACHIAS, Maine – University of Maine at Machias biochemistry professor Dr. Shallee Page has been awarded a $200,000, two-year grant from the National Institutes for Health (NIH) to study the DNA of fast-growth soft-shell clams and the relevance of fast-growing cells to human health.

Higher Education Foundation Awards Scholarship to Kelsey Porter
MACHIAS, Maine – The trustees of the Maine Higher Education Assistance Foundation (MeHEAF) are pleased to announce the awarding of a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to Kelsey Porter, a business and entrepreneurial studies major at the University of Maine at Machias. She is a graduate of Jonesport-Beals High School.

Registration Deadline Nears for UMM's Spring Trip to Italy
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias is planning a nine-day excursion to Italy in the spring of 2013 for both UMM students and interested community members. The deadline to register for the trip is December 15. English Professor Gerard NeCastro is organizing the trip, which will run March 30 – April 7, and will include tours of Florence, Rome, Venice, and Pisa.

Open Registration for Spring 2013 Courses
Whether you are a recent high school graduate, want to finish the college education you put on hold, are interested in exploring your interests, or want to become more competitive in the job market by learning new skills, the University of Maine at Machias has the classes and programs you need to achieve your goals. Registration for spring 2013 courses at UMM is currently open to the general public. More than 280 courses are being offered during the spring semester, including more than 50 delivered entirely online.

Maine's Seabirds the Focus of Upcoming Talk at UMM
MACHIAS, Maine – The Friends of Maine’s Seabird Islands will give a presentation at 4 p.m. on Monday, November 26 at the University of Maine at Machias. Stephanie Martin, programs coordinator for the Friends of Maine’s Seabird Islands, will provide an overview of the group’s coastal wildlife refuge, seabird management programs, and recent research efforts to document seabird foraging areas in the Gulf of Maine.

"The Nutcracker" Returns to Machias on November 17
MACHIAS, Maine – The Robinson Ballet Company of Bangor will bring Tchaikovsky’s beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker to Downeast Maine with a pair of performances on Saturday, November 17 at the University of Maine at Machias. The enchanting presentations will be offered at UMM’s Performing Arts Center, with performances at 3 and 7 p.m.
