Travelers Wanted for UMM's Spring 2014 Trip to China
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias has seats available on its eleven-day trip to China in May 2014. The trip, open to both students and community members, will run May 19 through 29, 2014.

UMM to Rename Support Building for First Physical Plant Director Crandlemire
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias will rename its maintenance and support facility during a dedication ceremony on Friday, February 8. The Crandlemire Support Building will be named in memory of the late Donald Crandlemire, UMM’s first director of physical plant.

UMM to Host Forum on Gun Rights, School Security, Mental Health, and Culture
MACHIAS, Maine – Amid national debate over gun control following the deadly Newtown, Conn., school shooting, the University of Maine at Machias will host a public discussion on policy issues relating to gun rights, school security, mental health, and culture. The forum will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, in the Portside room of Kimball Hall.

Registration Deadline Nears for High School Neuroscience Knowledge Competition
MACHIAS, Maine – The registration deadline for the first Maine Regional Brain Bee is drawing near. High school students have until Friday, January 25 to register for the free neuroscience knowledge competition, which will be held on Saturday, February 2 at the University of Maine at Machias.

Unique Mission Stabilizes UMM's Place as Environmental Liberal Arts Leader
MACHIAS, Maine – For small towns along Maine’s Downeast coast, a partnership with the University of Maine at Machias has helped them comply with complicated state zoning regulations. Students in Tora Johnson’s classrooms have helped create shoreland zoning maps and related software. They have also assisted in the creation of comprehensive plans, an invaluable aid to cash-strapped communities. But the students are the real beneficiaries, maintains Johnson, director of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Service Center at UMM. “For students, these are real, practical applications of their classroom work, and a great bridge between the University and the towns,’’ she said.

UMM Press Receives National Recognition
MACHIAS, Maine – Reason magazine's roundup of the best books from 2012 includes a recent publication by the Library of Early Maine Literature, an imprint of the University of Maine at Machias Press. The book is called Julia and the Illuminated Baron, and it is the first gothic novel written by a woman in the United States. The book was out of print for 212 years until the UMM Press released the novel, fully edited and annotated, last summer.

Ukuleles Spread Holiday Cheer to Elderly
MACHIAS, Maine – Members of the University of Maine at Machias Ukulele Club spread holiday cheer at Davis Estates in Machias on Friday, December 14. The popular music group, made up of UMM students, staff, and community members, performed holiday tunes and special requests from their 1400-page songbook during the hour-long concert. The group performs at the assisted living facility every month, and judging by the toe tapping, hand clapping, and singing along, their performances are clearly a favorite activity for the facility's elderly residents.

Maine’s First Regional Brain Bee to Test Students’ Neuro-Knowledge
MACHIAS, Maine – High school students from throughout Maine will get a chance to test their knowledge of neuroscience when the University of Maine at Machias hosts the first Maine Regional Brain Bee in February. The Brain Bee is being planned by the Psychology and Community Studies program at UMM with support from faculty at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
