"Painters, Players and Poets" on Exhibit at UMM Galleries

MACHIAS, Maine – An art show that appeals to the senses of sight, sound, and touch will be on display at the University of Maine at Machias Art Galleries during the month of February. “Painters, Players & Poets” showcases the work of Maine’s finest musicians, visual artists, writers, and furniture makers. An opening reception is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, February 10.

UMM Students Plan Walk for Suicide Awareness

MACHIAS, Maine – Students at the University of Maine at Machias are planning an Out of the Darkness Community Walk for Saturday, March 10 to raise awareness for suicide prevention. An information session is scheduled for Monday, February 13, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Portside of Kimball Hall. Event organizers encourage people who are interested in walking or volunteering to attend the meeting.

MACHIAS, Maine – The Binnacle, the literary magazine of the University of Maine at Machias, is sponsoring its Ninth Annual Ultra-Short Competition, open to writers in Washington County and around the globe. Interested writers of short narrative under 150 words and poetry of sixteen lines or fewer are welcome to submit their works.

UMM Launches New Disabilities in Youth Specialization

MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias announces a new Disabilities in Youth concentration within its Psychology and Community Studies bachelor’s degree program. This concentration is designed to meet the needs of individuals who are interested in working with children and youth who have disabilities, as well as their families. The Disabilities in Youth concentration is available this spring to students who are majoring in Psychology and Community Studies.

UMM to Host National Park Proponent Jan. 25, Opponent Feb. 8

MACHIAS, Maine – A proposed national park in northern Maine will take center stage at the University of Maine at Machias, where two upcoming speakers will advocate for and against the park proposal. State Senator Cynthia Dill (D-Cape Elizabeth) will speak in favor of the Maine Woods National Park during a presentation at UMM on Wednesday, January 25. Millinocket Town Manager Eugene Conlogue, an opponent of the national park proposal, will speak on Wednesday, February 8. Both events will take place at 7 p.m. in the Portside room of Kimball Hall.
