NeCastro Creative Writing Scholarship to be Presented at Honors Convocation
MACHIAS, Maine – The Peter J. and Carmella R. NeCastro Creative Writing Scholarship will be presented for the first time during the 2012 University of Maine at Machias Honors Convocation, to be held Wednesday, April 25, in the UMM Performing Arts Center. The annual event, which is highlighted by the Ivy Oration, Senior Watch Awards, and the celebration of student achievements, starts at 11:30 a.m.
The NeCastro Creative Writing Scholarship is named in remembrance of Peter and Carmella NeCastro. Both were book lovers and blue-collar workers, Peter a machinist and Carmella a waitress, who met and lived most of their lives in Erie, Pennsylvania. In World War II, Peter served as a translator for Italian POWs in Van Nuys, California. Carmella inspired in her six children a love of reading and storytelling.
UMM English professor Gerard NeCastro and his wife, Vicki, created the scholarship fund in memory of his parents and to recognize excellence in creative writing.
The income from the recently established fund will be used for annual scholarships to students who have shown the greatest promise in creative writing. Primary consideration for the scholarship will be given to students with overall academic excellence in creative writing, and further consideration will be given to student work outside of class in general service to the field of creative writing.
Selection of the scholarship recipients will be made on an annual basis by the Financial Aid Office working with the faculty of the Division of Arts and Letters. The scholarship will be awarded to two students at this year’s Honors Convocation.
