Added on: April 23, 2012

Wayne Peters '06MACHIAS, Maine – Wayne Peters, a Navy veteran and local school teacher, will receive the University of Maine at Machias’ Distinguished Alumni Award at the University’s 101st commencement on Saturday, May 12.

As a high school student, Peters dreamed of becoming a middle school teacher. But with the Vietnam War raging, he put that dream on hold to enlist in the U.S. Navy following his high school graduation in 1965. After less than two years of enlistment, he received a fleet appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he became a commissioned naval officer.

Over the next 30 years, Peters served on various submarines and eventually commanded the USS George C. Marshall, a 9,600-ton, 452-foot nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine. He also served in command of the shore-based nuclear power training unit in Windsor, Connecticut. Peters’ major command was at the Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, the largest fleet school in the Navy at the time. Other shore assignments over his distinguished career included branch head on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon, and four years as Chief of Staff to the Commander, Submarine Group Two.

While in the military, Peters received a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and a master’s degree from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

He earned many awards for his military service, including the Legion of Merit with two gold stars. Peters retired from the Navy in December 2001.

Shortly after his retirement, Peters returned to learning at UMM, where he graduated in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. He is currently a seventh- and eighth-grade math and science teacher at Bay Ridge Elementary School in Cutler.

Peters is an active member and past president of the Machias Rotary Club, and has served on the board of the Roque Bluffs Community Center and Saint Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Machias. He is involved with the Sunrise Senior College and the Washington County Democrats, and has volunteered as an auctioneer for countless charity auctions.

Peters resides in Roque Bluffs with his wife, Gail.

UMM’s commencement will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Frederic A. Reynolds Center. For more information about commencement activities, call Michael May at 255-1210.
