Melvin Adams Hired as UMM Director of Student Life
MACHIAS, Maine – The University of Maine at Machias has announced the hiring of Melvin Adams of Columbus, Ohio, as the University’s new director of student life. Adams will oversee all aspects of student affairs at UMM, including residence life, campus activities, dining services, health and counseling services, recreation and fitness, sustainability, and judicial affairs.
“I am extremely pleased that Melvin will be joining us here at UMM,” said President Cynthia Huggins. “Melvin’s background in student affairs, especially his work in student and community engagement, make him a great fit for UMM and our Environmental Liberal Arts mission.”
Adams brings more than 11 years of experience in student affairs, student engagement, and teaching to his new position at UMM. Most recently, he served as director for student and community engagement at Capital University, where he provided leadership for orientation, the campus center, student organizations, campus-wide programming, student government, and community engagement and service. Prior to Capital University, his previous posts included serving as director for student affairs and adjunct professor at the Maine College of Art, assistant director of the Center for Student Involvement at the University of Maine at Farmington, and coordinator for student involvement at Southeast Missouri State University.
“UMM’s focus on the Environmental Liberal Arts, the highly engaged students, faculty, and staff, and the natural beauty of the Downeast region makes this an outstanding opportunity,” said Adams. “I am grateful to join a diverse community committed to lifelong learning, student engagement, and being good stewards of our environment.”
Adams holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Arkansas State University, a master’s degree in student affairs administration in higher education from Ball State University, and is completing a doctorate in higher education administration from Northeastern University.
Adams will start work on the Machias campus in late February.
