Longtime UMM Professor Bernice Murphy Recognized with Legislative Sentiment
MACHIAS, Maine — Bernice Murphy, associate professor emerita of business administration at the University of Maine at Machias, was recently honored with a legislative sentiment by Maine’s 126th Legislature. Representative Katherine Cassidy presented the sentiment in recognition of Murphy’s distinguished 43-year teaching career at UMM.
The sentiment honoring Murphy reads: “Be it known to all that We, the Members of the Senate and House of Representatives, join in recognizing Bernice Murphy, of East Machias, professor of business at the University of Maine at Machias, on the occasion of her retirement after more than 40 years of commitment to education. As a senior faculty member, Professor Murphy has been very active in the university community, serving on numerous committees and assisting students. We send her our appreciation for her many years of service to her profession and to the State. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to her on her retirement; And be it ordered that this official expression of sentiment be sent forthwith on behalf of the 126th Legislature and the people of the State of Maine.”
The sentiment was introduced by Cassidy of Lubec and cosponsored by Senator David Burns of Whiting and Representative Lawrence Lockman of Amherst.
Murphy joined UMM in 1970, and for 43 years taught courses in the areas of management, marketing, and accounting for the Business and Entrepreneurial Studies program. She retired in May 2013.
