Lisa Athearn earned her Ph. D. in Telecommunications from the University of Florida in 2001. Her studies focused on non-fiction programming, with emphases in documentary film and reality programming. Her doctoral dissertation explored how different groups of people define reality television programming.

After completing her Ph.D., Lisa worked at the University of North Florida, teaching primarily in digital video production, broadcasting, scriptwriting, research methods and information gathering.

Lisa and her husband Kevin moved to Machias and became part of the UMM family in 2004. Lisa teaches, produces and researches in the broad area of media, focusing on non-fiction media forms (both televisual and Internet). Lisa and Kevin celebrated the birth of their son, Nicholas, in 2005.
